Austin Descent Notes

Austin Descent Chart

The following notes were written by Norma Leigh Rudinsky.

EARLIEST GENERATION

1. NN (No Name) AUSTIN of Bunwell

This assumed father of our known AUSTIN family in Bunwell may have lived and died elsewhere since no record of a father was found in the Bunwell records starting in 1725 (Film no.1526806). The earliest Austin reference occurred only in 1758 with the marriage of PETER AUSTIN (I) to SARAH JACQUES.

2ND EARLIEST GENERATION - children of NN AUSTIN

2. Thomas likely AUSTIN "churchwarden," bachelor

I believe this Thomas AUSTIN was brother of our ancestor PETER AUSTIN, but have not found definitive proof. Therefore he is called "likely." His birth year is estimated from his age of "84 years" at his burial on 13 April 1808. It is clear fron the Manorial Court Records that in his will of 1803 this Thomas bequeathed his farm lands to Peter AUSTIN (Film no.1657290).

2. PETER AUSTIN

PETER AUSTIN's marriage to SARAH JACQUES on 6 August 1758 and their children's christening dates in 1759-66 were given in Generations of Websters and confirmed in the Bunwell parish transcripts for the Archdeacon (Film no.1526806). At their marriage they were called "bachelor" and "spinster," so they had not married previously. They were married by banns and both lived in the parish. He was buried in 1783 according to Generations, and SARAH was called a widow at her burial on 3 April 1800 in Bunwell.

2. spouse. SARAH JAQUES

The birth date and place of SARAH JACQUES/JACKS are unknown, but at her burial in 1800 she was said to be 67 years old. So her birth year was estimated at 1733, which also fits her marriage in 1758 in the Bunwell transcripts (Film no.1526806). Nothing more is known of the JACQUES/JACKS family than SARAH'S likely parents ISAAC JAQUES and ELIZABETH UNKNOWN, with ELIZABETH's burial in Bunwell on 4 November 1757 as "Elizabeth wife of Isaac Jacques."

2. Mary possible AUSTIN

This Mary AUSTIN was married "by license," on 26 November 1758, so perhaps more could be learned of her or her husband Stephen CANN by obtaining the license if available. The burial date of 15 September 1764 given him, may actually refer to their son of the same name. No further data for this couple were found in the Bunwell transcripts (Film no.1526806).

2. Thomas possible AUSTI

This Thomas AUSTIN is a catch-all figure I put together to include three references to a man or men named Thomas Austin. The burial of wife Rose on 27 September 1763, the marriage of widower Thomas to Susanna Read in March 1765, and the burial of Thomas Austin on 7 December 1774 are not identified as events referring to the same Thomas, but they fit together by date and place. I have no evidence that Thomas AUSTIN was the son of Thomas, but attributed this relation as a possibility. The Elizabeth Austin who married Samuel Rose of Besthorpe is also attributed as a daughter of this Thomas without evidence. Only further study will show whether these possibilities were actual.

3RD GENERATION - children of PETER AUSTIN and SARAH JACQUES/JACKS

3. Sarah AUSTIN

Sarah AUSTIN was christened on 6 May 1759 in Bunwell. Her marriage to John BETTS, widower, on 6 July 1787 occurred two years after the birth of her son Benjamin in 1785, so his father is unknown. Possibly it was BETTS, since the boy was christened on 3 June 1787 only shortly before her marriage (Film no.1526806). Three BETTS children were given in the Bunwell transcripts before Sarah's burial on 4 August 1796 while still a young woman.

3. Isaac AUSTIN farmer

Christened on 6 January 1761, this Isaac AUSTIN as an adult was always listed as "farmer." I have not studied Bunwell parish records later than 1812, so do not have Isaac's death date, but his will was proved on 20 January 1820, and Manorial Court Records refer to his death in late 1819 (Film no.1657290).

3. spouse Elizabeth HUGGINS

Her marriage to Isaac AUSTIN was not found, but she was identified as his wife in the christening records of their children. Her death date before 11 July 1833 comes from the Manorial Court records, 1810-33 (p.423).

3. Ann AUSTIN

I am not certain that Ann, the daughter of PETER AUSTIN christened on 13 December 1762, belongs to this marriage (on illegible date 1788) to Samuel REYNOLDS, but no other Ann Austin appeared in Bunwell. I did not look for children named REYNOLDS (Film no.1526806). Generations gives Ann an illegitimate daughter Mary AUSTIN christened in Bunwell on 3 September 1783 (p.5).

3. ELIZABETH AUSTIN

At our ELIZABETH AUSTIN's burial on 9 June 1810, her age was given as 43 years, though she was at least a year older (being christened in Bunwell on 2 February 1766). Her early death left several young children, but I found no record that THOMAS WEBSTER married a second time. Several women were named Elizabeth Austin and could not always be identified. One of the witnesses at ELIZABETH's marriage and also the marriage of ELIZABETH's sister Sarah to John BETTS, was named Elizabeth Austin. She could not be their later sister-in-law, Elizabeth HUGGINS, wife of Isaac AUSTIN (Film no.1526806).

3. spouse. THOMAS "SINCLAIR" WEBSTER

The christening record for THOMAS WEBSTER on 23 June 1763 gives his name as "Thomas Sinclair Webster," but I found no connection to any Sinclair family. The Sinclair name does not even appear in the index of the lengthy Attleborough parish records (Fiche no.6046423). THOMAS'S marriage to ELIZABETH AUSTIN occurred in Bunwell on 9 November 1789 (Film no.1526806).

3. Peter AUSTIN

We found no more of Peter AUSTIN, christened on 19 June 1768, and he may have died young or moved to another town. In Wymondham several Austins had similar names, Peter, Elizabeth, and John (Film no.1911511).

3. Thomas possible AUSTIN  - attributed son of Thomas

I found little on this later Thomas AUSTIN other than two marriages. He first married Elizabeth CLASON, who was buried on 9 April 1786. Second he married Rebecca BLAKE on 10 October 1791. Their daughter Esther was christened in 1793 but buried on 30 May 1794 in Bunwell (Film no.1526806). Rebecca must be the Rebecca AUSTIN named in the Manorial Court Records in 1829 when lands were sold after the death of William Parsons in Bunwell (p.317, Film no.1657290). CLICK ON PARSONS to be added

4th GENERATION - grandchildren of PETER AUSTIN and SARAH JACQUES/JACKS

4. Benjamin "base" AUSTIN ?BETTS

This illegitimate son of Sarah AUSTIN, in turn, had an illegitimate daughter Mary by Ann THOMPSON, christened on 29 May 1806. Mary kept her mother's name (Film no.1526806).

4. William AUSTIN

William AUSTIN, son of Isaac AUSTIN, was christened on 26 September 1790. He was named as "eldest son and customary heir" in Isaac's will dated 12 Oct 1819, and bequeathed the "cottage in Bunwell ... containing together by estimation six acres" where he was then living (Manorial Court records for 1810-35, p.212, Film no.1657290). His family probably appear in the later Bunwell church records which I did not search.

4. Peter AUSTIN

Peter AUSTIN, son of Isaac AUSTIN, was christened 7 February 1798. As the ten-year-old favorite of his bachelor uncle Thomas AUSTIN, in 1808 Peter inherited several farm leases. Thomas's will had been made and signed on 9 May 1803, though he died five years later (Manorial Court records, 1779-1810, pp. 328-31, Film no.1657290). Peter (III) could enjoy his lands only briefly as he died young (buried about 1822). His "only child and heir" for the same leases was his one-year-old daughter Elizabeth (christened in December 1821), and perhaps his wife was also dead since she was not mentioned as receiving anything from her late husband. The infant Elizabeth's guardian was an unknown James Newman, as shown in the Manorial Court session on 19 Dec 1822 (Film no.1657290, pp.233,243-44,240).

4. Isaac, Mary, and Sarah AUSTIN

This son Isaac AUSTIN (christened 29 March 1801) and his younger sister Mary AUSTIN (christened 15 September 1804) were not found in the Archdeacon's transcripts (Film no.1526806), but are given in Generations, (p.5), presumably from other parish records I have not seen. Perhaps they died young along with their sister Sarah (christened 12 December 1802 and buried 19 July 1808), who was found in the Bunwell transcripts (Film no.1526806).
