Goward Descent Notes

Goward Descent Chart

EARLIEST GENERATION

1. GEORGE likely GOWARD

This GEORGE GOWARD was identified as Sen'r in the parish records of Barnham Broome in Norfolk, but no information on his occupation or status appeared (Film no.1526810 item 13). The earliest four GOWARD generations are labelled "likely" only because I could not confirm the birth of our FRANCIS GOWARD in this line.

1. spouse. ISABEL UNKNOWN [GOWARD]

ISABEL GOWARD was identified as wife of GEORGE GOWARD Senior at her burial notice on 20 March 1743. Their funerals occurred only five days apart in Barnham Broome, that of GEORGE GOWARD on 25 March (Film 1526810). Another funeral held eighteen days earlier was for an unidentified Elizabeth GOWARD, who may have been an adult daughter of GEORGE and ISABEL, or an infant daughter of their son GEORGE and his wife MARTHA.

2ND EARLIEST GENERATION -- child of GEORGE GOWARD

2. GEORGE likely GOWARD

GEORGE was probably the George Goward who was buried "aged 82 years" on 5 March 1797, so his birth date was about 1715 (Film no.1526810). He had a large family of seven christened children, and I also attributed to him GEORGE, who by his name and the date of his own first known child (1765) would seem to be the first-born son of GEORGE (Film no.1526810).

2. spouse. MARTHA UNKNOWN [GOWARD]

She is identified as GEORGE's wife with each of their seven children when christened in 1742-61, but nothing else was written of her.

3RD EARLIEST GENERATION -- children of GEORGE GOWARD and MARTHA UNKNOWN

3. GEORGE likely GOWARD

This GEORGE was not found among the seven christened children of GEORGE, but there was no other Goward family for him to belong to. From his name and the dates of his children I assumed he was the first born son of GEORGE. His death date limit comes from burial of his wife ELIZABETH as "wife" not widow in 1806 (Film no.1526810 item 13).

3. spouse. ELIZABETH UNKNOWN [GOWARD]

Like the other GOWARD wives this ELIZABETH is well identified as wife and mother, but only her burial in Barnham Broome on 12 December 1806 is known of her.

3. Martha GOWARD

Martha GOWARD, obviously named for her mother, was christened in Barnham Broome on 11 October 1742. Nothing more was found of her.

3. William GOWARD

Christened on 25 March 1744, this William may have moved away from Barnham Broome. Nothing further was seen of him after his marriage to Elizabeth GODFREY.

3. spouse Elizabeth GODFREY

Their marriage was recorded on 3 December 1771 in Barnham Broome, but nothing further was found of her GODFREY family (Film no.1526810).

3. Elizabeth GOWARD, Bridget GOWARD,  John GOWARD, Comfort GOWARD, Thomas GOWARD

For these five children, their christening dates were found as given in the Chart, but nothing else appeared (Film  no.1526810 item 13). Perhaps several did not live to adulthood.

3. Charles likely GOWARD

The only date found for Charles GOWARD was his burial at age 51 years on 19 September 1799 in Barham Broome (Film no.1526810). I attributed him to GEORGE because of his birth year about 1748.

4th GENERATION -- children of GEORGE GOWARD and ELIZABETH UNKNOWN

4. FRANCIS GOWARD "husbandman"/ labourer

No birth data or parentage were confirmed, so FRANCIS GOWARD was attributed to the Gowards of Barnham Broome in the absence of any other family in the available records. Moreover, it is uncertain whether he was the son of GEORGE instead of GEORGE, because known children were being christened by both men at close to the same time, for GEORGE until 1761 and for GEORGE starting in 1765. These years are within the range of possible years for the birth of FRANCIS GOWARD. His death certificate dated 26 July 1847 gave his age as 85, but his birth year may have been later than 1762, since inaccuracy in age was common. Further study may settle the parentage of FRANCIS GOWARD. His marriage to MARY RADE/READ on 13 June 1791 was in MARY'S home parish of Easton (Film no.1657203).

4. spouse. MARY RADE/READ

MARY RADE was christened on 24 July 1761 in Easton. Her death certificate dated 7 October 1854 (No.487, obtained by Amy VanCott) says she was 100 years old, which would put her birth date seven years before her christening. It would also make her 30 years old at the birth of her first known child in 1791, so perhaps her age at death was exaggerated. She and her husband FRANCIS GOWARD must have been living with their daughter Ellen and husband John NEAVE, since one of the NEAVES was listed on their death certificates as "in attendance" at their deaths.

4. George GOWARD

This George was christened on 13 October 1765 in Barnham Broome, but I found nothing more of him.

4. John GOWARD

John GOWARD was christened on 10 July 1770 in Barnham Broome, but I found nothing more of him.

4. William likely GOWARD

This William was christened on 8 March 1772 but nothing else is known of him.

4. Right likely GOWARD

This unusual first name Right (or perhaps Bright) was not designated as either son or daughter in the christening record in March 1771 (illegible day).

5th GENERATION -- children of FRANCIS GOWARD and MARY RADE

5. Sarah GOWARD

Sarah GOWARD was christened on 17 November 1791 in Easton parish (Film no.1657203). According to Amy VanCott's records she married William NEAVE.

5. Elizabeth GOWARD

Elizabeth GOWARD's christening was not found, but her birth date was estimated about 1793. According to Amy VanCott she married James HOWARD of Norwich.

5. Susanne GOWARD

Susanne GOWARD was christened on 15 February 1795 in Brandon Parva (Film no.1526810 item 15). According to Amy VanCott she married John PURLAND.

5. Ellen/Eleanor GOWARD

Ellen GOWARD was christened on 14 May 1797 in Brandon Parva (Film no.1526810 item 15). According to Amy VanCott she married John NEAVE. John was "in attendance' at the death of Ellen's father, and Ellen was with her mother MARY RADE, according to the official death certificates obtained by Amy VanCott

5. MARY GOWARD

The christening of MARY GOWARD on 20 January 1799 is given in the Brandon Parva registers (Film no.1911510), but her death on 23 May 1882 and burial on 27 May in Wicklewood are from Amy VanCott's records. She moved from Brandon Parva to Wymondham with her marriage to THOMAS WEBSTER.

5. spouse. THOMAS WEBSTER

The marriage of MARY GOWARD to THOMAS WEBSTER on 17 September 1817 in Wymondham had witnesses Jeremiah Forster and Elizabeth Goward (presumably MARY'S elder sister). Banns were read, and he was given as "bachelor" and she as "spinster," so neither had been married earlier. Their abode was always Suton or Sutton, a section of Wymondham, and THOMAS was sometimes listed as "labourer" (Film no.1911510). He died in 1858, according to Generations (p.4). See the
Webster Descent Chart for the children of this family.

5. Ann GOWARD

Nothing more is known of Ann than her birth on 17 March 1801 and her christening on 28 March 1801 in Brandon Parva (Film no.1526810 item 15). Presumably she died as a child.

5. Richard GOWARD

Richard's first name is given as James in Generations (p.8), but Amy VanCott later corrected this error. Both films of the GOWARD records give the name Richard for his birth on 6 January 1804 and christening on 8 January 1804 (Film nos.1526810, 1657203). His marriage on 14 May 1829 was found by Amy VanCott. I did not follow the BRIGGS family of his wife Mary Ann. The emigration of Richard GOWARD and his wife Mary Ann BRIGGS to New York in 1850 seems unconnected to the departure of his sister MARY's son FRANCIS WEBSTER to Utah a few years later. Amy VanCott once had contact with Richard GOWARD's descendants in Michigan and California, but the contact was lost.
