Rade/Read Descent Notes

Rade/Read Descent Chart

The following notes were written by Norma Leigh Rudinsky.

EARLIEST GENERATION

1. WILLIAM RADE/READ

This earliest WILLIAM READ/RADE was found in the Easton parish records, where later READ/RADE families had already been searched for Amy VanCott in 1967 by the then Vicar of Easton parish. Nothing was given of WILLIAM's occupation or status, but his seven children were christened and three buried in Easton (Film no.1657203 item 26).

1. spouse. MARY UNKNOWN

The marriage record of WILLIAM to MARY was not found, but it must have occurred before their first child in 1726. The burial record of "Mary Rade" on 24 May 1769 in Easton gave her age as 60 years, so her birth date must be about 1709. I assume she was ours though not identified as wife or widow.

2ND EARLIEST GENERATION - children of WILLIAM RADE and MARY UNKNOWN

2. Susanna RADE/READ

Like all of the christened children of WILLIAM and MARY, Susanna was identified as their child by both parents' names. Christened on 1 July 1726, she married James HOWLETT on 29 March 1752 in Easton. The Elizabeth HOWLETT buried as an infant on 11 August 1766 was likely their child (Film no.1657203). Note: Susanna's christening date is given as 4 July 1725 in the Archdeacon's transcripts (Film no.1526811), but this is probably a copying error.

2. Mary RADE/READ

Christened on 3 November 1728, Mary possibly married William FILBY on 13 October 1751 in Easton, but in that reference the last name is not clear and may be "Reeve," not Read. I did not try to trace their Filby children, if any.

2. WILLIAM RADE/READ

Christened in November 1731 (illegible day), WILLIAM must be the man earlier found by Amy VanCott. There is no proof of his identity as son of WILLIAM, but no other Read family appeared in Easton parish records at this time.

2.spouse. MARY UNKNOWN

The marriage of WILLIAM and MARY was not found in Easton, so MARY'S maiden name is unknown. Many Easton marriage records are now lost (Film no.1657203), or the couple may have married in her home parish.

2. Sarah RADE/READ

Sarah was christened on 13 January 1733, but nothing further was found of her, and possibly she died young.

2. Martha RADE/READ

Christened on 20 May 1737, this Martha may be the female who was buried on 21 September 1737 even though not labelled "infant." Suggestive of her death is the fact that the next READ daughter was named "Martha" according to the Archdeacon's transcripts (Film no.1526811).

2. Robert RADE/READ

Christened on 30 October 1738, this Robert seems to be the one who was buried on 14 April 1741, though again he was not labeled as a child (Film no.1657203).

2. Martha RADE/READ

Again a daughter was named Martha at her christening on 2 August 1741, but she too probably died, being buried on 17 September of the same year though without the label "infant." (Film nos.1657203 and 1526811).

3RD GENERATION - children of WILLIAM READ and MARY UNKNOWN

3. Sarah RADE/READ

Christened on 13 March 1760, Sarah READ/RADE likely married William CATCHPOOL of Rackham on 19 Apr 1784 in Easton, but another Sarah Read married "John Browne of St Andrews parish in the city of Norwich" before their daughter Elizabeth was christened on 12 Nov 1783 and buried at age 9 months in Easton on 28 June 1784 (Film nos.1526811 and 1657203). Neither marriage has conclusive proof, though William CATCHPOOL seems more likely, because the minister was the Vicar of Honingham, and the banns dates are listed. I did not try to trace either marriage.

3. MARY RADE/READ

MARY READ/RADE was christened on 24 July 1761 in Easton. Her death certificate (No.487, dated 7 October 1854 and obtained by Amy VanCott) says she was 100 years old, which would put her birth date seven years before her christening. It would also make her 30 years old at the birth of her first known child, so perhaps her age at death was a little exaggerated. She and her husband FRANCIS GOWARD must have been living with their daughter Ellen and husband John NEAVE, since one of the NEAVES was listed on their death certificates as "in attendance" at their deaths.

3. spouse FRANCIS GOWARD

No birth data or parentage were confirmed, so FRANCIS GOWARD was attributed to the Gowards of Barnham Broome in the absence of any other family in the available records. Moreover, it is uncertain whether he was the son of GEORGE instead of GEORGE, because known children were being christened by both men at close to the same time, for GEORGE until 1761 and for GEORGE starting in 1765. These years are within the range of possible years for the birth of FRANCIS GOWARD. His death certificate dated 26 July 1847 gave his age as 85, but his birth year may have been later than 1762, since inaccuracy in age was common. Further study may settle the parentage of FRANCIS GOWARD.

3. Elizabeth possible RADE/READ

This Elizabeth was not found among the children identified as christened by WILLIAM in Easton, but she was married to William Spinks on 15 October 1786 as "Elizabeth Read spinster of Easton." I did not search for Spinks children.

3. Anne READ/RADE

Christened on 29 October 1767, this Anne may be the wife of Thomas Hewlett whose son Thomas was christened on 8 July 1787 in Brandon Parva parish (Film no.1526810). She was identified as "late Ann Read spinster, but we are not certain she belonged to our WILLIAM and MARY. Earlier, Susanna, daughter of WILLIAM, had married James HOWLETT (which was often an alternate spelling of Hewlett), so they may have been in the same family as this Thomas Hewlett.

3. Martha RADE/READ

Christened on 27 February 1770, this Martha married Samuel BROWNE on 7 October 1794 in Easton and had six well-documented children. Their first three children died as infants or children, and the other three were not searched further (Film no.1526811).

3. spouse. Samuel BROWNE "labourer"

I found nothing more of Samuel BROWNE's occupation or status.

3. Robert RADE/READ

Christened on 22 May 1773, this Robert may not have grown to adulthood. I found nothing more of him.

3. Susanna RADE/READ

Christened on 6 February 1778, this Susanna was not found later.

3. Richard unlikely RADE/FREAD

Not found among the christened children of WILLIAM and MARY, this Richard was buried on 19 March 1795 in Easton. No more is known of him, and he is probably too late to be a child of WILLIAM RADE/READ.
