Australia Descendents

Home Australia Descendants Histories

Israel (James) Webster

Israel Webster, later known as James Webster, was a sailor. He was born about 1820 in Wymondham, Norfolk County, England. He traveled to Australia in 1850 and lived there for the remainder of his life. He was christened Israel Webster, but he was known as James Webster by his descendants in Australia

He arrived in Melbourne in 1850 and purchased 2 acres of land in the Melbourne area, where the Richmond Railway Station now stands, but was lured to the goldfields and sold the land. He traveled around eventually settling at Glenpatrick, known as the Glen. The block of land he selected in 1889 would have been close to the old central area of the district. There were objections to his selection on the grounds that the land was auriferous, but eventually the Mining Department gave its permission. He later sold that land and was lured to the gold fields that were active in Maliagul and Avoca. He eventually settled in Glenpatrick. He married Emma Morris on June 14, 1860 in Melbourne, and he died September 12, 1911 in Melbourne.

The Webster selections consisted of 60 acres at the top of the Glen. Israel (James) Webster and three of his children, James, John, and Frances, selected land, but Frances left the district and transferred her land to her brother. John wrote in 1896 explaining the non-payment of rents, "Things have not been favourable with me, and having a family of six to keep, I have never money to spare." At this stage John hoped to raise money from the sale of his share in a mining lease he held with James Brereton, Tom McLaughlin and Alex Johnston.

James Webster also had a struggle to survive, because his family of seven was born within the ten years after his marriage, and he lived in a small cottage at the top of the Glen. Like his brother, he supplemented income with gold mining. For example, he joined with Tom McLaughlin in 1895 and was successful in finding gold. He remained in Glenpatrick after his children left home, and he supplemented his farm income with his wage as a mail carrier. When he left in 1933, he burned the cottage which was built on the land he had held by Miner's Right.
